A runner and passer out of the old Notre Dame box and single wing, he twice was named to the all-league backfield and won multiple letters in all three major sports at Sequoia. A star player in the Army, he pitched for the Oakland Oaks in the Pacific Coast League and enjoyed several seasons of semi-pro activity. He shared his expertise with Little Leaguers in the Los Altos area for some 20 years.
