Gary Beban graduated from Sequoia High School in June 1964. His high school career, while very good, did not indicate the full extent of his talents. It was at U.C.L.A. that he developed into a great college player. Consider the following facts for the former Sequoia single wing tailback:
  • The 1965 U.C.L.A. team had a record of 8 wins, 2 losses, and one tie. Pac-10 champions
  • The 1966 Beban led U.C.L.A. team defeated one of the all time great Michigan State teams, that was undefeated prior to their Rose Bowl loss to UCLA 14-12.
  • The 1966 U.C.L.A. team had a record of 9 wins and 1 loss
  • The 1967 U.C.L.A. team had a record of 7 wins, 2 losses, and one tie
  • The overall U.C.L.A. record during Beban’s quarterbacking was 24-5-2

Gary Beban was the recipient of the Heisman Trophy, the most prestigious award given to the outstanding college football player in the country, during the 1967 season & is the only player in the long and illustrious history of U.C.L.A. football to be awarded the Heisman Trophy.

He is currently the only San Mateo county athlete to have received a Heisman Trophy.

Gary Beban was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988 & the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1995. He is also a member of the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame.

Outstanding tailback on the 1962-1963 teams, who set S.P.A.L. records as runner and passer. Great poise, competitor, and leader. All S.P.A.L Team 1962-3-63, All Northern California 1963 and All American and Heisman Trophy winner at U.C.L.A. 1967. Later, he played for the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos.
