A two-time all-league selection as a Sequoia swimmer, he won silver and bronze Olympic medals in Modern Pentathlon (and two national championships) before launching a career as one of America’s most distinguished athletic coaches. Holding degrees from universities of Montana, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, he serves as head coach at the Center for High Altitude Training in Flagstaff, Ariz. As a coach at various American universities, his athletes captured 25 conference championships and invitational meets. Runner’s World magazine named him “World’s Best Coach”. He is the author of four books on running and more than 50 articles in scientific journals, and is a charter member of the Montana Sports Hall of Fame.
