Small in stature but lightning fast, he dominated PAL sprints in the 110 and 120 categories from 1942-45. He swept 50 and 100-yard dashes for three years in the league finals, and was a member of the 1945 North Coast Section championship team. Holding the 120-yard low hurdle record at 13.2, he also performed as a running back on the varsity football team. A World War II veteran, he became a community leader in the Crescent City area, prominent in emergency planning and search and rescue operations.
