She never hit a ball in an interscholastic match, but Mimi Arnold is Sequoia’s most famous tennis player. Girls’ SPAL tennis was years away, but she won a National Hard Court title at age 11, captured State 13 and 18-year-old honors, and became the U.S. 18-and-under queen in 1956. Graduating the junior ranks, she attained a top ten ranking among U.S. women in 1956-57 and ’59, and won the National Hard Court title in 1964. A semifinalist at Wimbledon, she joined Billie Jean King on the pioneering Virginia Slims circuit that paved the way for equality among men’s and women’s tennis internationally. Her exploits earned her enshrinement in the Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame.
